How do you know if this coach is right for you though? In today’s post, we’ll be talking about 3 key things that you need to look for when hiring a Nutrition Coach.

1. Coaching Background

While we cannot overstate the importance of qualifications, in this day and age, qualifications are relatively easy to achieve. With the availability of online study programs, the barrier to obtaining certification is often quite low. While this is generally a good thing as more people will have the opportunity to pursue their interest, this also means that paper qualifications do not hold the same weight that they once commanded.

However, certifications are a good starting point from which to assess the competency of your potential nutrition coach. Some good certifications to look out for are the Precision Nutrition program, the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSN) Nutrition program. If the coach has a degree in nutrition, that will also be a good sign of their foundational knowledge being sound.

Aside from the educational credentials of the coach, having actual coaching experience is a must. Depending on what your goals are, you will want to ensure that the coach has the relevant experience. For example, if you were looking for a nutrition coach to help with improving your daily living, you will want to get a coach that has a background in coaching people through meal preparation and life coaching. If you are looking to enhance your sports performance, you will want to get a coach that is an athlete themselves or has a corresponding training certification

2. Communication Skills

Knowledge is vastly important, but for a coach, knowledge is merely a compulsory starting point. Application of the knowledge to your goals and circumstances is what determines how your plan is set up.

When communicating with your potential coach, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Do you understand the main points of your plan?
  • Do you understand what exactly your coach is asking you to do?
  • Is your coach answering your concerns?

Communication is key to ensuring that you get to your goals as the most important part of any plan is its execution. If you only have a vague idea of what to do, you will not get the results you are looking for. If the coach is also not taking into account your questions or clarifying with you on your understanding of the plan, then it is very unlikely that you will be able to execute the plan well.

3. Comfort Level

While educational qualifications and communication skills are very important, the comfort level you have with a coach is often the most important aspect. This is because trust in the coaching relationship is the foundation from which everything else is built. If you find yourself becoming too uncomfortable with the way the coach is treating you, then it is unlikely you will listen to them and follow their plan as you will have plenty of doubts in your head.

A coach is not supposed to be a guide, but a partner that you work with to help figure out how to get you to your goals. Every good coach will agree to a simple interview call before getting started and you can use this opportunity to get a sense of their coaching style.

Is the coach a forceful and highly energetic personality, or do they take a gentler approach that makes you feel more comfortable? Whichever one you choose must be complementary to your own style. With the former, someone to boost your energy will be a positive, but you might end up feeling overwhelmed. With the latter, you will feel comfortable with them, but they might not be able to motivate and push you like you need.

A good nutrition coach should be easy to talk to and you must feel like your concerns have been heard and validated. Often times, the issues with food and weight management are psychological and being able to open to a nutrition coach will help them guide and tweak your plan to your specific situation and triggers.
